Ontario Lacrosse Announces 2005 Ontario Hall of Fame Inductees

TORONTO, Ontario- The Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame today announced the 2005 Inductees to the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Museum in St. Catharines, Ontario.

The 10 Inductees to the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame for 2005 are Chuck Baldwin of Mimico, Ray Broadworth of Gloucester, Doug Flavell of St. Catharines, Nelson Bally-Huff of Seneca Nation, Chuck Martin Jr. of Six Nations, Miro Martinello of Windsor, Janice Mt.Pleasant of Six Nations,Alexander Roundpoint of Akwesasne, Joe Tomchyshyn of Etobicoke and David White of Akwesasne.

Elected in the Veteran Category, Chuck Baldwin of Mimico played in the old Pro league and was a top competitor on every team he played on in the 1930’s in Mimico. Mr Chuck Baldwin, to our knowledge was the only Ontario lacrosse player killed in World War II. He paid the supreme sacrifice so others could continue to play the best game in the world, Lacrosse.

Ray Broadworth (deceased) of Gloucester, elected in the Builder category was a founder of Gloucester Lacrosse Association in 1970.Broadworth was the epitome of a volunteer sportsman and spent countless hours organizing events, promotions and rallying support and volunteers ensuring that all players had a place to play. He advocated “giving back” to the community and their sport and through the children he gave a place to play, his legacy lives on.

A member of the St. Catharines Athletics Jr. team from 1963 to 1966, Doug Flavell is nominated in the Player Category. Flavell was an Ontario Allstar and leading scorer. Flavell scored the fastest 3 goals in Minto Cup history, in 11 seconds in 1964 with the Oshawa Green Gaels. He is the only athlete to win a Minto Cup with the Green Gaels, and the Memorial Cup with the Niagara Falls Flyers Jr. A Hockey Club in the same year, 1964. Flavell was voted City of St. Catharines Player of the Decade for the 60’s and was inducted into both St Catharines and Oshawa Halls of Fame. He went onto play net for the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey Club.

Regarded as one of the greatest offensive players of his era, Nelson Bally-Huff of Seneca Nation is elected in the Veteran Category. He played Jr. with the Newtown Athletics in the late 1930s and at 16 moved up to play on the men’s team. In 1943 Bally-Huff entered military service to fight in WW II, serving the US Navy. Lacrosse resumed after the war ended and Bally-Huff was unparalled as an offensive player. He was Scoring Champion for 4 straight years among the teams of the North American Lacrosse Association (NALA) and won NALA. MVP Award in 1950 and 1951. Bally-Huff was one of the first box lacrosse players that could pass and shoot right handed or left handed with equal accuracy and power.

Chuck Martin Jr. of Six Nations, Ontario is named in the Player Category.Martin demonstrated leadership, sportsmanship and natural scoring ability throughout his career. He was leading scorer for Jr. B and Sr. B for 5 consecutive years from 1979 to 1984 and won the Sr. B MVP.in 1982.Martin was a member of the all Native Team that participated in the World Cup of Lacrosse in 1980.

Elected in the Builders Category, Miro (Medo) Martinello of Windsor has spent over 55 years either playing or coaching lacrosse at all levels. Martinello became known for his innovative coaching ideas and coached very successfully at the professional level including Syracuse, Quebec and Detroit. He received both National and Local recognition for his involvement in Lacrosse and was the recipient of the Canadian Government 125th Medal of Confederation for Outstanding Achievement in 1992.

   

An Ambassador for the Six Nations Lacrosse Community, Janice Mt. Pleasant is elected in the Builder Category. Known for her integrity and her knowledge, She has spent over 20 years volunteering for Six Nations Minor Lacrosse and continues to be active at the Junior level. Mt.Pleasant has worked as Zone Rep, Secretary, President, Coach, and Manager and currently serves on the Jr. B Board of Directors. 

Alexander Roundpoint of Akwesasne elected in the Builder Category has coached and managed teams at the Jr. and Sr. level in Akwesasane for over 25 years. As coach of the Akwesasne Thunder Sr B team Roundpoint won the Presidents Cup in 1995 and 1997. In 2002 won the Jr. B Coaching Staff of the Year with the Akwesasne Thunder Jr. B Lacrosse team where he continues to coach today. 

“Jumping Joe” Tomchyshyn of Etobicoke is elected in the Player Category. Winner of the Minto Cup in 1952 with the Mimico Jr A team and the Mann Cup with the Brooklin Redmen in 1968, he was an Allstar goalie and team leader. Tomchyshyn received the Mike Kelly Award as MVP in the 1968 Mann Cup.

Elected in the Player Category, David White of Akwesasne was the Team Captain of the SR. B Akwesasne Warriors from 1977 to 1985. In one year he received League MVP, Leading Scorer and Most Sportsmanlike accolades in the Sr. B division. White was known as a solid two-way player, being a high scorer, strong defender and very team oriented.

The 2005 Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame Induction Reception will be held at The Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame located at Lock 3, Welland Canal Centre, 1932 Welland Canal Parkway, St Catharines, Ontario on October 15th 2005, beginning at 12:30 pm.
