In Memoriam: Phil Day
The Ontario Lacrosse Association mourns the passing of legacy lacrosse official Phillip Day, who was a staple on the fields and floors throughout Ontario over the last five decades.
Phil was a consistent presence throughout his entire career, recognized by coaches, players and fellow officials in both box and field for his constant dedication to the game. From humble beginnings in August of 1975 until just earlier this past spring, Mr. Day maintained his “active” certification at the beginning of each season while building an impressive resume as an official and mentor, with his 50-year career making him the longest-serving official in the history of the Ontario Lacrosse Association. A familiar volunteer face around the Ontario Lacrosse Festival, his personal officiating career highlights included assignments in Junior “A” games, an MSL All-Star game, and travelling throughout the United States as an official with the launch of Team Canada during the early 1980s.
“We are united in sadness upon learning of the passing of Phil Day, an individual who shared his love of the game with so many people each season” stated Ontario Lacrosse Executive Director Jeramie Bailey. “We extend our sympathies to the Day family, and his many friends and officiating partners throughout the Ontario Lacrosse community and around the world.”
