Tradition

Lacrosse is one of the oldest team sports in North America, originating with the Indigenous peoples of Ontario, Quebec, and the northeastern United States. The women’s outdoor game reflects many of the sport’s earliest values—skill, creativity, and purposeful team play—while evolving into its own globally recognized discipline.

Women's Field Lacrosse was founded in St Andrews, Scotland in 1890, when the first game was played at the St. Leonards School. The game was introduced to the school by Louisa Lumsden, who had watched a men's game in Canada in 1884 and brought the sport back to Scotland.
